Kurz naar Christian Schüler (1855) [![Een dwarsdoorsnede van het vestingwerk rond Groenlo (1627)](https://www.archeologiegorinchem.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Grollo-1-900x251.jpg "Foto Wikicommons") ](https://www.archeologiegorinchem.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Grollo-1.jpg)Een dwarsdoorsnede van de vesting rond Groenlo (1627) ## Hoge verwachting Aangezien het gebied, het [glacis](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacis_(vesting)) en de [bedekte weg](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedekte_weg), is aangemerkt als een gebied met een hoge archeologische verwachting, diende onderzoek plaats te vinden om de archeologische waarden die mogelijk verloren gingen, vast te leggen. Het doel van de opgraving was in de eerste instantie het behoud en de documentatie van archeologische sporen. De omvang van het op te graven areaal werd bepaald door de verstorende ingreep. Het [glacis](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacis_(vesting)) loopt richting het oosten met 0,7 m op en is opgebracht op natuurlijke afzettingen behorende tot de [formatie van Echteld](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formatie_van_Echteld).
